Did you know that snow sports are among the fastest growing activities in Europe and already have a massive following in the US? Skiing and snowboarding have become so popular with young people, teenagers, their parents, professionals and snow junkies alike that there are now year-round artificial snow peaks in the UK, offering lessons, competitions and advanced snow environments. However, a much more unconventional snow sport is now taking off with speed, and that is mountain biking on the white stuff.
Kona mountain bikes have recently held a competition in Austria where the best riders compete over snow and ice slopes. The event is called White Style and it is celebrating its fifth anniversary this January. Because of the reputation of Kona Mountain Bikes, the competition has attracted some of the biggest names in mountain bike free-riding from around the world including three riders from the UK; Lance McDermott, Grant Fielder and Sam Pilgrim. The 2009 event attracted 23 riders from 12 countries and gave spectators the chance to see some impressive jumps, mighty spins and fantastic flips over the specially constructed slopestyle course.
Head of construction is our very own Grant 'Chopper' Fielder who has promised that this year there will be even more big jumps which both the riders and the crowds really enjoyed. After the winner has been announced on Friday 29th January, a massive party with some heavy beats will be welcoming the riders and fans alike to really finish the even off in style. Kona Mountain Bikes are working in partnership with One Big Park, Camelbak and Bikepark Leogang.
